Setting Up Your Household After Moving to Dubai: The Domestic Help Playbook Nobody Hands You at Orientation

Maid cleaning a modern kitchen in Dubai

Every expat orientation in Dubai covers the visa, the residency, the driving license, and the school selection. Nobody covers the household-help question, which is strange because it is one of the biggest quality-of-life decisions a new Dubai family will make in their first six months. Here is what the orientation deck should have included.

The threshold conversation nobody has upfront

The main salary earner must have a permanent salary of AED 25,000 and provide proof of wage for sponsorship as an expatriate in Dubai (AED 20,000 for some family type categories for employer housing). Golden Visa holders have more flexibility. Under another structure, Emirati citizens operate.

If the family crosses the barrier, sponsorship can be an option. If not, it will be either hourly cleaning services by licensed companies or through Tadbeer centers, with maids hired by Tadbeer and the family as a client, or babysitting during the evening or during the weekend, on a booking basis. None of these are lesser choices; these are merely different structures.

The visa process is not as complicated as it looks

If one is eligible for the visa, then the visa process follows twelve steps and takes 10 to 15 working days, provided that the documents are correct. The steps are: application for an entry permit fromthe  General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), medical fitness test at an approved centre in the UAE, Emirates ID registration, purchase of health insurance and the issuance of the MOHRE work permit. The total real cost is approximately AED 3,270 to AED 5,270, depending on the visa length (1 or 2 years) and a GDRFA deposit of AED 2,000 to AED 2,500 refunded when the visa is cancelled properly.

Families new to the process probably think it will be intimidating. When the documents are all collected, it is a linear administrative process: sponsor’s passport, Emirates ID, salary certificate above the threshold, Ejari certificate (tenancy contract), marriage certificate (for married sponsors) and the worker’s passport plus the attested domestic worker contract (Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022).

For families who want to handle the paperwork themselves or through a private PRO service, maid visa services walkthroughs cover the exact step-by-step in Dubai. For families who prefer to hand the whole thing to a Tadbeer center, budget an additional AED 500 to AED 1,000 in service fees on top of the visa costs.

The three sourcing routes and which one fits your household

Agency route. The traditional maid agencies in Dubai come with a sourcing package and they will also process the visa along with it and they charge AED 3,000 to 5,000 for the placement. Quick and costly – and agency methodology is not always in line with family.

Tadbeer center route. One-stop shops certified by the MOHRE, which can process all of the workers’ visa procedures, including worker sourcing (optional). Full service packages are offered for AED 3,500 – AED 5,500 per month for the Tadbeer center as the technical employer.

Direct-hire route. The family sources the worker through a verified direct-hire platform, interviews her personally, hires her directly (becoming the legal employer), and processes the visa either independently or through a Tadbeer center of their choice. Platforms like ChooseMaid let families find a maid in Dubai from AED 195 per month subscription with no placement or agency fees.

With expat families still getting to grips with the Dubai system, it can be down to the amount of interviewing and paperwork the family would like to do themselves. The agency route is for the convenience of cash. The direct-hire route is for the effort vs. control and cost savings. The Tadbeer route is in the middle.

Beyond a maid: cooks, drivers, and nannies

The level of staffing that is required in the Dubai household is not one-size-fits-all. Many families with unique requirements create a combination of staff, not just one person who is always available and is their ‘live-in’ maid.

A dedicated cook makes sense for families with dietary preferences that require specialized preparation (Indian regional cuisines, Filipino cooking, Ethiopian Orthodox fasting-day meals, kosher or halal-compliant kitchens). Cook salaries run AED 2,500 to AED 4,500 per month for a live-out arrangement. Families who hire a cook in Dubai through a verified direct-hire platform can filter for the specific cuisine and experience level they need rather than settling for a general household cook.

A safe driver is good for families where both parents work, older children are active in multiple extracurricular activities, or older family members require frequent rides. Experience and hours are the deciding factors for driver salaries ranging from AED 2,500 to AED 4,500 per month.

Having a separate nanny from the cleaning and cooking service is the norm for families with children under 5 years old who wish to have someone whose only job is to look after the kids.

Not all families require all four. Most homes in Dubai have one full-time maid and they may hire additional maids such as a babysitter for the evenings, an hourly cleaner for cleaning at least once a week, or an outsourced driver to drive to the airport, etc. The appropriate staffing configuration will vary according to the family’s calendar, the ages of the children and the family’s financial resources.

The mistakes new expats make in the first six months

Signing with the first agency to respond. The agency business in Dubai is saturated and there’s a wide variation among agencies. Talk to at least three before signing anything!

Not verifying references. Profiles are included in every agency and platform. Not all profiles are what they say. Contact the family that came before and ask specific questions about the arrangement.

Presuming subject to transferability with households. It is not. The visa is tied to one sponsor, at one residence. If the arrangement does not work out, the visa is cancelled and a new visa is issued for the next household.

Not taking the trial period into account. The first three months will tell you if the fit is a good one or not, even with reference checks and interviews. Don’t agree to a 2-year visa on the first date; include a trial period as part of the arrangement.

Cash-paying outside WPS. Domestic worker salaries must pass through the Wage Protection System (WPS) by MOHRE. Outside cash payments cause compliance problems at renewal within WPS.

The bottom line for new expats

Hiring domestic staff in Dubai is not a transaction, but a project. Handle it as you did with the school choice and the residency documents – it is one of the quality-of-life victories that makes Dubai a liveable city for a dual career family. Do it quickly and you will be dealing with turnover, ingrained expectations and visas again for the next six months.

There are three different routes (agency, Tadbeer, direct hire), all of which are viable. It depends on the amount of control, cost and effort you’re willing to sacrifice to gain the other. That is your choice and not the first one that gets to you.
